Hoch Tirol Ski Traverse – April 2022

Day 1

Day 2

The initial plan for Day 2 had been to summit Gr. Geiger and climb down it’s lesser frequented NE face to ski the __ glacier towards Kursinger Hütte. We woke to weather that looked promising to continue with those plans, but on checking the forecast with the hut, the weather was to come in again from mid morning. It ended up being another day spent in the white room. A featureless glacier that neither of us were familiar with made it all the more fun to negotiate.

Day 3

Blue skies and a promising stable forecast! At last. Oh hang on, what’s that sound of chains? The flag was trying to blow away. High winds. Excellent.

Day 4

A member of our group injured himself in a fall the day before and awoke to find himself in too much pain to continue. We said our goodbyes and parted ways – we would meet him in Kals in 2 days time. Our destination today was ___. We planned to tick of 4 summits along the way, __ __ ___ __. The weather was looking fantastic and motivation levels high, legs perhaps not so.

Day 5

Destination Kals.

Day 6

Regardless of the amount of fresh snow that had fallen at higher altitude the previous day, or how beautiful the weather was, Ryan and I were not in a mental or physical state to follow through with the original itinerary plan of Grossglockner. Instead, reunited as a team of four, we set off from Lucknerhaus in the direction of Boeses Weibl summit. We wanted a good times spring corn kinda day, and we got more than we were hoping for. Fresh white powder, followed by some corn kernel soup and a muddy walk out. Herrlich.
